Michael Heaton QC holds a Masters degree in Law from the University of Melbourne as well as a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Jurisprudence from Monash University in Victoria.

Mr Heaton was appointed Queens Counsel in 1999.  He is admitted to practice in all Australian States, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory.

He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK) and Australia.  He is a Fellow of the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (ACICA) and on its Panel of Arbitrators.  He is also member of the Institute of Arbitrators and Mediators Australia (IAMA) and an IAMA registered Grade 1 Arbitrator.  He is an adjudicator under the Building and Construction Industry Security of Payment Act in Victoria.

Mr Heaton is an accredited Mediator under the National Mediation Accreditation System in Australia and a Victorian Bar accredited Advanced Mediator.  He is on the ACICA Mediation Panel, the IAMA Mediation Panel, and the Panel of Franchise Mediators under the Franchise Code in Australia.

In recent years Mr Heaton has practised in a broad range of areas covering contract including good faith, corporations including director’s liabilities and ASIC examinations, trade practices, property law including indefeasibility, sale, mortgages and leases, building and construction including arbitration and adjudication, professional negligence including stockbrokers and solicitors, equity including fiduciary obligations and constructive trusts, testator’s family maintenance, administrative law and planning.  He also practices as an Arbitrator, Adjudicator and Mediator.

Mr Heaton chairs the Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee of The Victorian Bar which covers arbitration, adjudication and mediation.  He is a member of the IAMA National Council and the Victorian Chapter Committee.  He is author of the Guarantee and Indemnity Section of the Lexis Nexis Court Forms and Precedents Victoria.  He is a member of the Victorian Commercial Bar Association, the Australian Insurance Law Association, the Society of Construction Lawyers Australia, the Dispute Resolution Board Foundation, the Building Dispute Practitioners Association and the Victorian Planning and Environmental Law Association.
